If you play much online poker at all, be it with play money or with real money, than you have no doubt played some one on one tables. One on one offers a few unique opportunities to poker players that a 5 or more player table does not.

For one, the odds are better for you to win. You really have a one in two shot of taking home the money, so this is generally the first thing that attracts players to the one vs. one tables. Also, personal playing style and personal skill come into play at a one vs. one table more than any other.

You will, more than at any other time, rely on your skills as a poker player to fend off your opponent.  If you are too weak, you will be railroaded into folding every hand. But, if you are too strong, a clever player will take the big pots, leaving you with the small ones.

You need to strike a good balance. You need to show players early on that you have what it takes to be aggressive, but also show them that you are not going to play bad hands. Don’t come out of the gate weak every single time. You need to show your opponent that you have a backbone, and that you are here to play poker.

The first three 5-10 of a one on one game is really when the pace is set, and really is the time it takes for players to establish an idea about their opponents. If you don’t come out at least a little strong in these opening hands, than get ready for big bets right out of the gate on every hand.  If your luck is bad, than your lack of assertiveness in the beginning stages can cost you.
