If you are going to gamble, the chances are that you know that the deciding factor on whether you are going to win or not, is reliant on a good deal of luck. Whilst some opinions may differ, the majority of us will always assume this is the case.

There has always been a saying amongst gamblers that will invariably contain the words ‘lucky streak’. This is normally in conjunction with a player winning several hands at cards or a run of consequential victories at another form of gambling.   

Now there are definitely clashing opinions on whether luck determines the outcome of any game which there are conflicting parties. At times one can win with the worst possible hand at cards. In this case the players are entwined in a battle of wits. Lady luck has very little to do with this. However if a player has consistently been drawn a winning hand, the chances are he will be thanking lady luck, albeit quite silently. So it really is a question of fate rather than luck.  

If you are on the outside watching a player win hand after hand, invariably you will hear that luck is smiling on that player! Of course there is probably a hint of jealously in there as well!

Of course it is often said that luck is a fickle partner; and no soon as you start winning, it can all change and the losing streak begins. So there is more chance that we are just talking about probability here. The word probability brings fear into a gamblers heart, for it suggests, and quite correctly, that luck, be it good or bad is simply an equation of what could happen and win. There are no mystic qualities that are at play, and lady luck is simply a tool to give yourself that little extra boost.

Now there have been many films and books and the odd television program that has been made around people having strategies to beat the odds and laws of probability. Yes there are people that can count cards etc. But even so the odds are stacked against them.

Most mathematicians would run a mile from a casino because they know the odds are stacked against them. They certainly wouldn’t be venturing there in the hope of lady luck shining upon them!

A simple fact is, is that luck, probability and all other aspects aside there really is only one guaranteed winner at a casino, and that is the owner. Now luck really is on their side!!
